Hats are a great way to keep the sun off your face when you’re surfing.
But they’re also easy to lose, and if you’re just using any old baseball cap, it’ll get pretty wet and dirty by the end of the day.
There is an alternative, though.
A high-quality surfing hat will stay put no matter what you throw at it.
You’ll get all of the protection you need and it won’t disappear the first time you wipeout.
Can You Wear a Hat While Surfing?
You can definitely wear a hat while surfing and if it’s cold or sunny, you probably should.
During those hot summer days, a good hat will keep the sun off your face, protecting you from sunburn and glare.
When it’s cold, a hat will prevent the heat from escaping from your head and retain more essential body heat.
However, most hats are not designed to be worn while surfing.
If you don’t wear the right hat, there’s a good chance it will slip off your head as you’re riding or when you bail.
What are Surf Hats Made Of?
Most surf hats are made from polyester or nylon, synthetic fabrics that provide good protection against the elements and won’t hold onto water like cotton and other natural materials.
What Makes a Good Surf Hat?
A good surf hat is one that fits like a glove and is designed to stay on your head during rapid movements and crashing waves.
It should also provide UV protection (the best hats will include a UPF rating) and keep your head warm.
In addition, good surfing hats will have ventilation around the ears so that you can remain aware of your surroundings.
What are the Best Surf Hats?
There are many hats that can qualify as “surf hats”, even though they are not necessarily advertised as such.
However, the ones we’re focusing on here have all been designed for surfing or general watersports and we believe they are some of the best surf hats on the market.
Dakine Indo Surf Hat
The Dakine Indo Surf Hat is a reasonably priced (around $40) surf hat that is quick-drying and features brim flaps to protect your neck.
It has a wide brim, is highly durable, and should stay on your head as you paddle and surf.
Anroll Surfing Bucket Hat
The Anroll is a low-cost ($23) surf hat made from a fast-drying material.
It features removable flaps to cover your neck and a chin strap to secure it in place. It’s not the most elaborate or attractive surf hats, but it gets the job done, and that’s the most important thing.
Quiksilver Bushmaster Sun Protection Bucket Hat
The Quiksilver Bushmaster is a sun hat that comes in a variety of colors, all with a chin strap and a wide brim.
It’s not strictly a surf hat as it’s not waterproof and is made from cotton, but reviews suggest that people have been using it in the water and they have a lot of good things to say about it.
FCS Essential Surf Bucket Hat
A sturdy, durable surf hat that’s available in both blue and black and features a solid chin strap with a buckle clasp.
At $35, it’s a little more expensive than some of the other options, but it’s a decent surf hat.
Kaiola Surf Cap
The Kaiola Surf Hat is not currently available on Amazon, but it’s a premium surf hat available on the brand’s website.
It costs $65 and is more expensive than any other hat, but it’s easily one of the best surf hats available and is well worth the additional expense.
The Kaiola Surf Hat has UPF 80 sun protection, dries quickly, and is waterproof.
It features an adjustable chin strap and a strong visor, and it’s the only surf cap on this list, which means it has a traditional baseball cap shape.
The Patagonia Surf Brim Hat
The Patagonia Surf Brim Hat is another premium branded surf hat sold by a major outdoor clothing company.
You can’t go wrong with Patagonia, and they produce some of the best surf hats in the business.
This particular surf hat has an adjustable chin strap, wide brim, and offers great sun protection.
It’s not as complete as the Indo Surf Hat and we prefer the Kaiola Surf Hat as well, but it’s still a premium product.
The Patagonia surf hat is available for a fraction under $50.
The Patagonia R3 Yulex
The R3 Yulex is a little different from the other surf hats on this page.
It’s designed with warmth and comfort in mind, as opposed to sun protection.
Made from Yulex rubber, this sustainably manufactured surf cap can be worn in colder temperatures and will prevent a lot of heat loss.
It’s compact, comfortable, and you can pick one up for less than $50.
Finding More of the Best Surf Hats
There is no surf hat category on Amazon, at least not at the time of writing.
Many of the hats we included above were listed as “fishing hats”, which isn’t very helpful.
There is a category for “sun hats”, but if you want a specific surf cap or hat, you’re better off just typing it into the search bar.
You can also check with surfing brands and outdoor clothing brands, including Quiksilver, Patagonia, and Kaiola.
