Preparing To Camp In Sequoia National Park

Any experienced camper will tell you that adequate planning and preparation is the key to ensuring that you have the best camping experience, no matter which destination you end up choosing to visit. We’ll show you a few tips to consider for preparing to camp in the Sequoia National Park.

Many of the campsites in the Sequoia National Park allow prior reservations to be made to secure your camping spot. This is highly recommended and try to do so as far in advance as possible because the availability of campsites in these areas can fill up fast – understandably!

Knowing when to visit is an essential part of planning a camping adventure. The best time to go camping in the Sequoia National Park is during the summer; however, this is also the busiest time. While some campsites are still open for camping in the winter, this is not recommended unless you already have experience camping in very low temperatures.

Lastly, make sure that you thoroughly research each of the campsites you consider for your camping adventure. Different camps cater to various aspects of camping. For example, some grounds in Sequoia National Park have sections designated for tent camping only, while others are perfect for RV and camper van camping.

Also, be aware of any fees or permits that you may require for each campsite. Although wilderness permits are typically only needed for backcountry camping, you will not need one if you stick to the official campsites.

Atwell Mill Campground

The Atwell Mill Campground is another fantastic camp in the Sequoia National Park. However, the primary reason it is featured on our list is not just because of the beautiful scenery that you will get to experience here, but because this campsite offers arguably the most private and secluded camping experience in the entire park.

This, of course, also makes it a highly popular campsite. Unfortunately, the Atwell Mill Campground does not take any reservations. So, you will want to ensure that you arrive here as early as possible to secure your camping spot. Various amenities like toilets, showers, and potable water are available for campers here.

A small fee of $12 per night will be charged to camp here.

Lodgepole Campground

We have saved what we consider to be the best campground in the Sequoia National Park for last. Indeed, the Lodgepole Campgrounds are by far the most popular in the National Park, primarily due to its proximity to the mesmerizing Giant Forest that is only two short miles away.

For the most immersive camping experience, we highly recommend this campsite. Once again, reservations are highly recommended; however, they can only be made between May and September. Outside of these months, the campsite works on a “first come, first serve” basis, so ensure that you arrive at the camp as early as possible!

A $22 per night fee will be charged to camp here. Tent camping and RV camping are most welcome.
